Technology that Matters

The Power of the Weekly Question

19 January 2024 Edel Sweeney-Lee

As I approach my one-year mark at Effect, it's a good time to reflect on a new start in the new year. The first year of any new job comes with its unique quirks, as you decipher the intricacies of the company culture and anticipate the evolving nature of your role.

Among all the weekly rituals that bind us together at Effect—twice-a-week morning teas that foster camaraderie and a shared sense of purpose to well.... drink coffee. One standout tradition has etched itself into the very fabric of Effect: is the 'Question of the Week.'

Every week during our weekly kick off, our CEO, poses a thought-provoking question to the entire team. These questions range from the lighthearted—recalling fun holiday activities or debating the favorite Easter egg which surprisingly got quite heated—to the more profound, delving into our convictions about social issues. We've touched on matters ranging from the future of global food accessibility to the duopoly of New Zealand's food supply, wealth inequality, climate change, and even the impact of electronic waste.

One memorable question transported us to a hypothetical scenario:

“It's the morning after the nation voted, ousting all major parties, and you're offered any portfolio of your choice, which one do you choose?”

The responses unveiled the team's diverse perspectives, with some leaning towards the "easier" realms of tourism, hospitality, arts, culture, and heritage, while others grappled with the complexities of housing, infrastructure, and health.

Reflecting on these discussions, I can't help but appreciate how these weekly enquiries underscore Effect's commitment to social issues. It's evident that the team genuinely believes in "crafting technology that matters." We are driven by the conviction that our work should extend beyond mere projects; it should make a meaningful impact. Effect's values serve as guiding principles—anchors that ground us as we navigate the dynamic landscape of technology. Through open discussions and shared goals, we talk about ways to authentically live our values in our day-to-day endeavour's.

Looking through the 50 or so questions of the week at Effect, it’s easy to see some key themes that embody the essence of our organisational values: Leap Further, Go Deeper, Help More, and Cheer Louder.

Through our weekly questions, I can see it mirrored our commitment to "Leap Further," as we delved into thought-provoking discussions about future trends, personal growth, and hypothetical scenarios.

The emphasis on deep dives and personal growth aligns perfectly with our value "Go Deeper," encouraging team members to step out of their comfort zones and embrace new opportunities.

"Help More" found expression in the collaborative spirit evident in questions centered around team support, social impact, and assisting one another with challenges.

Lastly, as we reflected on achievements, expressed gratitude, and planned year-end celebrations, we embodiedy the spirit of "Cheer Louder," celebrating not just projects but the people and moments that defined our shared journey. In essence, the process of organising these questions showcases the seamless integration of our values into our day-to-day interactions.

As I look back on my first year, it's clear that Effect is not just a workplace; it's a community fueled by a collective passion for meaningful impact. The 'Question of the Week' isn't just a conversation starter; it's a testament to our commitment to thoughtfulness, empathy, and the belief that technology can, and should, be a force for positive change. I can see that the team genuinely believes in "crafting technology that matters”

So here's to more weeks of insightful questions, shared insights, and a future filled with technology that truly matters.

Cheers to a year well-spent at Effect!
